Range
Western Panama to n Argentina to se Brazil
Habitat
Humid terre firme forest, second growth woodland and borders.
Sometimes seen in isolated trees well away from forest.
Niche
Usually on trunks and large branches of larger trees, where it
chisels bark surfaces searching for ants and other prey.
Life History
Pairs or groups of up to 5 may be seen together in the same tree,
especially on large dead trees. Sometimes seen in the same tree
with Lineated woodpeckers. Flight is strongly undulating. Excavates
a nesting cavity high in a large tree, where it lays 2 eggs.
Status
Uncommon; seen mostly along Quebrada Blanco, feeding in large
dead trees.
