Description
Length 13.5 - 15 cm (5 - 6 in) One of most brilliantly-colored tanagers. Hood light green; Upper body black; lower back and rump red to orange; belly black; rest of underparts turquoise blue except shading to violet at throat. Black ring around eye. Color reinforced by unusual head feather structure. Sexes similar.

Range
South America; Guianas and Venezuela to upper Amazon.

Habitat
Found in seasonally-flooded (varzea) and non-flooding (terra firme) forest, on forest edges and near clearings. Live in mid-level or canopy. Call is squeaky.

Niche
Found in groups of four to ten; hop along bare branches or visit fruiting trees and shrubs. Eats mainly fruits, buds, leaves, perhaps some insects.

Life History
Nests found 5 - 20 m up in trees; contain two to four greenish white eggs with brown and black spots.

Status
Common in habitat.
