Description
Length: 16.5 cm (6.5 in) No ear tufts; eyes yellow. Either grayish brown or rufous above; crown narrowly streaked buff or whitish. Oblong black "eyespot" on each side of back of head. Wings with buff or whitish spots; underparts white, broadly streaked with rufous or brown.

Range
Extreme sw US to n Chile.

Habitat
Found along humid forested borders of rivers and streams, swampy river islands, varzea borders and second growth woodland.

Niche
Occurs alone,or in pairs, hunts by day or night, catching insects, small birds, lizards or anything else it can overpower.

Life History
Active day or night and often mobbed by small birds. Responds strongly to a whistled imitation of its call, as do many other birds in areas where it is found. Flicks tail when agitated. Nests in tree holes or cavities in termite nests; lays 2-5 white eggs.

Status
Fairly common, frequently seen along the Tahuayo, near the Amazonia Expeditions lodge.
