Range
Ne Peru, se Colombia, e Ecuador, w Amazonian Brazil.

Habitat
Local. Found in gallery forest, second growth and lighter, open woodland mainly in varzea forest. In all habitats often near streams.

Niche
Usually in lower story or near ground, but also feeds in the canopy at fruiting trees.

Life History
Quiet and easily overlooked, except for its call. Males form leks 4-6 feet up in understory; individuals are often widely scattered, each with several display perches. Mostly silent displays include lateral side jumps, short flights (often slow and butterfly like), and swoop-in flights accompanied by a "klok" sound on landing. Also side to side pivoting with head low, feathers of upper back and sides erect like a fan, and raised tail filaments brushing another male's face and throat.

Status
Uncommon, seen in varzea forest behind the Amazonia Expeditions lodge on the Rio Tahuayo.
