Description:
Male 65 mm, female 77 mm. The skin on the dorsum is smooth; the
skin on the venter is granular. In dorsal view, the snout is pointed
with a fleshy, upturned process. The cranial crests around the
eyes and extending to the partoid gland are moderately elevated;
other cranial crests are absent or diffuse. The partoid glands
are slender and about three times as long as the upper eyelid.
A row of large, cream tubercles extends from posterior tip of
the partoid gland to the groin. The dorsum is tan with a few irregular
black spots; the flanks are orange-tan. The venter is creamy tan
heavily suffused with grayish-brown; the iris is pale gold with
black flecks.
Ecology
Habitat:
tropical rain forest, found in terre firme forest (at
RCTT).
Niche:
carnivorous: prey includes insects and and any other small creatures
it can catch.
Life History:
The few specimens known of this toad have been found amidst leaf
litter on the ground in primary forest. The only specimen yet
found at RCTT was discovered in July 1999 on the upper Quebrada
Blanco, and is pictured at left. The eggs and tadpole are unknown.
Status:
At the Reserva Comunal Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo, this species is known
from one specimen, found May 1999 by G. Neise (pictured at left).
