Description:
Males
41-59 mm., females 51-77 mm. Recently it has been shown that the
name Leptodactylus wagneri has been applied to a complex
of several species, four of which (L. diedrus, leptodactyloides,
petersii and wagneri) occur in the Iquitos region; the species
exhibit differences in size, distinctness of the longitudinal
folds on the dorsum, and subtleties of color pattern, but the
differences in life history and habitat have yet to be determined.
Ecology
Habitat:
terrestrial , found in secondary forest
and clearings.
Niche:
carnivorous: prey includes insects and any small creatures it
can catch.
Life History:
This terrestrial frog is common in clearings and secondary forest.
Adults are usually nocturnal, but juveniles are active by day,
especially after rains. Males call from shallow swamps.
Status:
Fairly common. In the Reserva Comunal Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo area
it is found in secondary forest near Tahuayo River.
