Description
Body length: 17.5 -27 cm (7 - 10.6 in); Weight: 338 - 436 g (12 - 15.5 oz) Tiny monkeys with three color zones in upperparts: shoulders and forelegs are black, dark brown or mahogany brown; back to hip is variegated black and yellow to orange striations; hindlegs dark brown to reddish brown or deep red. Head black, muzzle white, short hairs on head. Some have white eyebrow band across forehead. Tail brown to black. Underparts dark red. Many subspecies with color variations.

Range
South America; east of Andes in Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, upper Amazon basin of Brazil.

Habitat
Mature, disturbed and secondary lowland rainforest. Widespread distribution.

Niche
Diurnal and arboreal. Lives in small groups of 2 to 12. Lives in middle and lower levels of forest. Lives on fruits, nectar, and insects, which it gathers from crevices in tree trunks. Large range of up to 100 hectares. May travel with other tamarin species.

Life History
Family group consists of one breeding female, one or more males, and their young.

Status
Common; most frequently-seen tamarin in Peru.
