Description
Body length: 39 - 45 cm (15 - 17.7 in); Weight: 2 - 2.5 kg (4.4 - 5.5 lb) Black upperparts; long, shaggy fur; face nearly bare, black with white stripe running diagonally along side of face from below eye; crown nearly bald but long black hair growing over brow. Hands and feet whitish, legs sometimes white also. Chest white to buff; belly with thin black hair.

Range
South America in upper Amazon basin of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.

Habitat
Arboreal; prefer terra firme (non-flooding) forest but also found in seasonally flooded forest. Lowland evergreen forest only. Live in middle and upper canopy.

Niche
Eat fruits, seeds, leaves, and ants. Sleep on large branches in upper canopy. Shy and quiet; sit motionless on branches in dense vegetation. Live in groups of two to eight, most usually three to four.

Life History
Produce a single offspring every two to three years. Only one breeding female in each social group.

Status
CITES Appendix II; IUCN Red List: vulnerable. Widespread but generally rare; sporadic distribution, may be locally common.
