Description
Body length: 28.7 - 36 cm (11 - 14 in); Weight: 860 - 1400 g (1.9 - 3 lb) Head round with small flat almost naked black to gray face; brow black, white or gray, usually differing in color from crown; sides of head may be yellow or orange or white around ear. Long thick fur brown, reddish-brown or gray on upper parts; pale yellow to red-orange underparts. Non-prehensile tail; usually hangs down. Holds head low; sits with feet tucked under body close to hands. Color highly variable.

Range
South America; found in strip along base of Andes from Colombia to Bolivia and Paraguay; Brazil south of Amazon.

Habitat
Mature and secondary lowland evergreen rainforest in Amazonia only; dry forest. Found in densely-vegetated areas, particularly around water edges and in swampy forest; bamboo thickets; prefer middle and lower levels of trees.

Niche
Diurnal and arboreal. Eats leaves, fruits and arthropods such as spiders and millipedes; the only small monkey to live mainly on leaves. Sleep at medium heights in sheltered trees. Whoop and scream at dawn.

Life History
Monogamous. Young carried by male.
